Meet the EASE team: Jay

Here at EASE, we’ve built a strong team of skilled professionals, each bringing their own experience and approach to the job. Apprenticeships are a key part of that, giving new talent the chance to learn on the job while making a real contribution to the projects we deliver. Increase producityvit and bring new energy and ideas

In this post, we’d like you to meet Jay Stocker, one of our apprentice site engineers. Jay joined us in 2024 and is currently working on the A47 Blofield project.

He recently featured in Apprenticeships Norfolk TV campaign, which highlights real stories from local apprentices. He shares what it’s like to start a career in site engineering, what he’s been learning so far, and why he enjoys being part of the team here at EASE.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Jay Stocker, and I’m an apprentice site engineer at EASE. I like playing football, listening to music, playing video games and playing the piano.

What is your job and what do you do each day?

I’m an apprentice site engineer and I’m currently working on the A47 Blofield project. The project is to upgrade the A47 between Blofield and North Burlingham with a new two-lane dual carriageway about 70 metres south of the current road, improving traffic flow and safety.

How long have you worked in site engineering? Have you had other roles in the industry?

I started in September 2024, after finishing sixth form. This is my first role in the industry.

What made you want to go into this kind of work?

I did some work experience with EASE in September 2023. That’s what got me interested in engineering.

What do you enjoy about your job?

It’s varied and interesting. I like that it’s not just office based. I enjoy being outside and working in different areas.

What’s your favourite thing about your role?

I like the hands-on experience. As an apprentice, I get to learn on site and see how everything works in real time.

Are there any challenges?

There are problems on site sometimes and I get to help solve them. Every day is a bit different.

Do you have a favourite moment or site you’ve worked on?

I’m still on my first project but I’ve settled in quickly and I enjoy working with the team. It’s a big highways job so I’m learning about drainage, earthworks and structures.

What would you say to someone thinking about a site engineering apprenticeship

It’s a great job if you want something practical and hands-on. The work changes all the time so it keeps things interesting.

Gaining hands-on experience through an engineering apprenticeship

Thanks to Jay for sharing his experience. Site engineering is a rewarding career for anyone who enjoys practical work, problem solving, and being part of a team. Apprenticeships offer a great way to build those skills from day one.

If you’re thinking about an apprenticeship in the construction industry or want to learn more about what we do at EASE, we’d be happy to chat.
