Get to know Darren, one of the key people helping to keep everything running behind the scenes.
As Commercial Manager, he brings financial expertise and a sharp eye for detail to every project, making sure things stay on track and profitable.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Darren but most people know me as Dj. I’m married with three girls, two dogs and a cat. I love football. It’s my passion, whether I’m watching, playing or coaching. I’m very involved in two local football clubs, Norwich CEYMS and Taverham FC, and I also volunteer on the girls’ pathway for Norwich City.
What is your role title and what do you do?
Commercial Manager. My role is to manage the financial aspects of projects and the business as a whole. I focus on profitability, negotiating contracts and managing risks, all of which contribute to the company’s overall success and growth.
How long have you worked in the industry?
I’ve worked in the industry for around 15 years, with a five-year break where I explored other sectors and grew my own business, which I recently sold.
What made you want to pursue this career?
I always thought I’d be an accountant. I was working on GCSE-level maths at the age of 10 and later got my accountancy qualifications in my mid-20s to match the work I’d already been doing.
What do you enjoy about your job?
Working alongside some great people that I’ve known and loved for a number of years.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
Finding a more efficient way to complete a task and improving profitability.
Do any challenges come with your job?
There are daily time pressures and deadlines to meet, but I enjoy working this way and always make sure these are met.
Do you have any favourite moments from your time as a site engineer/in this role? Or a favourite site/project you’ve worked on?
My favourite moments are when we all get together, whether for business or socially. As a busy workforce, it’s rare we’re all in the same place at once, so those times really stand out.
